In 2019 it is celebrated the 140th anniversary of the epic journey of 419 Madeiran people from Funchal on April 23rd, 1879 on the British sailboat “Ravenscrag” to Hawaii in search of better life conditions. On August 23rd, after sailing for four months filled of sacrifices and hardships, they disembarked in Honolulu singing happily has they stepped ashore, and with them, there was a Manchete musician (Braguinha). They were going towards the origin of what is considered the world’s most famous popular musical instrument: the Ukulele. These are the facts that, through the current project, the Associação Musical e Cultural XARABANDA aims to enhance and expose to all in an educational and intergenerational way thus, enriching the local cultural identity.
