FESTA DOS COMPADRES
FEBRUARY 23 AND 24
Carnival celebrations begin with the “Festa dos Compadres”, which takes place in Santana. This festivity of traditional character is inserted in the rituals of passage of the winter for the spring and regeneration of the local community. The action takes place in a clear antagonism between the local residents of the male sex and the feminine sex, evident in the confection of dolls and dolls with a satirical character. The party has as its objective the judgment of the “compadre” and the judgment of the “comadre”, during which social critiques are made to the events and performances of the individuals and institutions of the community during the year. In the end, both “compadre” and “comadre” are burned as punishment. In this way, the community regenerates and relieves social tensions, preparing them for a new cycle, which begins with spring.
