The APEL, created on the 23rd of July of 1927, is the Portuguese Association of Booksellers, which replaced the previous Lisbon Association of Booksellers.
In 1939, the Association became the National Academy of Publishers and Booksellers. In 1974 it was renamed as Portuguese Association of Publishers and Booksellers – APEL, recognized as a legal public utility institution by the Law 460/77 dated of November 7th. The Apel is a member of the International Publishers Association (IPA), European Booksellers Federation (EBF), founding member of the European Federation of Publishers (EFP) and member of the Regional Centre for Book Promotion in Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLALC).
In Portugal, the APEL is the National Agency responsible for the International Standard Book Number (ISBN), providing its services through the following link: APEL-Serviço ISBN
