Municipality of Culture 2008 - Funchal  Municipality of Culture 2008 - Funchal
In 2008, Funchal both celebrated its 500 years as a city and hosted the title of Municipality of Culture. Due to the this great anniversary and given the extensive programming, the activities designed for the Municipality of Culture became part of the 500 Years Celebration Commission overall planning. However, there was always the concern of not setting aside the nature and identity of the Municipality of Culture project.
Thus, 8 activities have been held under the above project:
«BEETHOVEN SYMPHONIES»
From January to December, the Madeira Classical Orchestra performed Beethoven’s nine symphonies, a tribute to the German composer in a total of four concerts.
«CULTURAL TOURISM - WALKS THROUGH TOWN»
The exhibition commemorating the International Day for Monuments and Sites, which is celebrate on April 19th was officially opened on April 15th by His Excellency, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva at the Madeira University – Colégio do Jesuítas.
The major goal of this exhibit was to promote the activities under the project the Culturreg Project – Development of Cultural Tourism in Macaronesia, under the Community Initiative Programme INTERREG III B 2000 - 2006, Azores - Madeira - Canary Islands, developed in four stages as from October 2006 to May 2008.
This is project addresses to the visitor in order to promote in each of the three cities its cultural side through the creation and development of new tourism products. Nevertheless it also addressed residents, in order to raise their awareness towards the importance of cultural heritage.
The display introduce three major themes: Tourism, the City and Festivities, which were subdivided into twelve guides highlighting movable assets and real state heritage of the City of Funchal, since the 15th century till nowadays.
«REFERENTIAL WORKS IN THE PUBLIC COLLECTIONS OF MADEIRA»
An exhibition officially opened by His Excellency, the President of the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva at the Temporary Exhibitions Room of Funchal’s Museum of Sacred Art.
This project was part of the MUSEUMAC programme - Museums Network - Madeira, Azores and Canary Islands - which assembled and introduce to the public art works representing some of the collections existing in some museums in the Region.
A total of 77 works were displayed at the Quinta das Cruzes Museum, Museum of Sacred Art, House - Museum Frederico de Freitas, Contemporary Art of Museum Funchal, "Vicentes" Photography Museum, House-Museum Christopher Columbus - Porto Santo Museum, Henrique and Francisco Franco Museum, Sugar Museum and the Madeira Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts Institute.
«POETRY IN THE CITY»
To celebrate the World Poetry Day, on March 21st was undertaken an initiative called "Poetry in the City." In partnership with the local press and media such as: RDP-M/Antena 1 Radio, Journal da Madeira, Diário da Cidade and Diário de Notícias, several known personalities have recited poems calling upon the city of Funchal. Different poems have also circulated in local newspapers and throughout the city’s downtown.
A Poetry Meeting was held at the Café do Museu – Museum of Sacred Art, during which were also recited poems, having Funchal as its major theme.
«AT THE SOUND OF HIP HOP»
To celebrate the International Dance Day, on April 29th took place a dance performance by the group 7th Attitude, which introduced a Hip-Hop performance at the Municipal Garden Auditorium.
«V CENTENARY OF THE MISERICÓRDIA DO FUNCHAL»
In the month of July was celebrated the 500th anniversary of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Funchal. At the former building of the Santa Casa, currently work Madeira’s Regional Government facilities. It was also screened a documentary on the institution’s experiences at the Placa Central, summarizing the five centuries of its existence in Funchal.
Later on, at Museum of Sacred Art, a visit to an exhibition of sacred art pieces belonging to the Santa Casa da Misericórdia’s collection, and finally a visit to the Temporary Exhibitions Room of Madeira University Board, where it was possible to find references to the different Chairmans, to the Medical and Surgery School, among other important aspects of the institution’s present and future in Funchal.
Closing these celebrations, on July 25th was held the Solemn Session at Funchal City Hall, followed by a concert performance by the Souza Winds Quintet at the Electricity Museum - Casa da Luz.
Waihofen Orchestra
From a cultural exchange, which started in 2007 with the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra performance at the City of Waidhofen, in Austria, in 2008, the Waidhofen Orchestra was invited travel to Funchal to perform three concerts. The first was held on August 20th, representing the official opening concert and the highest point of the 500 Years Celebrations of Funchal City.
Two other concerts were held at the Santa Catarina Park on August 22nd (with more than two thousand spectators) and on August 23rd at the Church of Monte.
«HORIZONTE MÓVEL»
Between September and October was possible to attend the exhibition “Horizonte Móvel - A Perspective on plastic Arts in Madeira: 1960-2008 “. An initiative that gathered at the Contemporary Art Museum of Funchal, artists and their works, reflecting part of the existing production of  plastic and fine arts in Madeira.
According to the Commissioner of the exhibition, Isabel Santa Clara, "in a city with this location, it’s vital to preserve the horizon moving, making of departures and arrivals an opportunity to learn about the scales and distances, as well as a way of facing the world. The word perspective betrays a choice from among many others, which is confirmed by the plurality of views that influence and transform an area into a cultural space.
The 60s came naturally as a way of marking the beginning of this display, considering that it’s in this period that lies the birth of Funchal’s Museum of Contemporary Art, although the incorporation of locally produced works have came later on. Therefore the goal was to show what was produced in the island, as well as to promote the dialogue between the museums’ collection and other pieces from private collections (less known), thus broadening the different interpretation contexts.
Rather than aspiring to exhaustiveness, the purpose was to note down experiences and discoveries, sometimes without continuity, revealing a particular attention to the updating of the artistic forms of expression. (...)
