Municipality of Culture 2009 - Câmara de Lobos  Municipality of Culture 2009 - Câmara de Lobos

After Funchal, it was time for Câmara de Lobos to welcome the Municipality of Culture project, in 2009, which was very much addressed to its locals.
The opening ceremony was held on January 16th and it was a very simple-acting event. The programme was introduced to the media by the official entities: the Câmara de Lobos City Hall and the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture / Department of Cultural Affairs.

Almost uniformly the various parishes in the municipality hosted different initiatives within the Municipality of Culture project, closely collaborating with the local artists and population.

During the Câmara de Lobos 2009 Municipality of Culture, was also held the opening of the most important cultural infrastructure of the Municipality, the Câmara de Lobos Municipal Library, on May 3rd. A building built from scratch, which also offers, beyond library services, a study room, a multi-activity room especially conceived to welcome exhibitions, seminars, among other events. There is also an area especially addressed to the younger ones, which includes a children's entertainment room.

Within the programme, it’s important to highlight the exhibition «o menino de sua mãe», which assembled two different areas, the visual arts and the writing, around a text by Valter Hugo Mãe; the public release of the juvenile book «Pedro Pesquito» by Maria Aurora; the display «Pau de Poncha», a tribute to the drink permanently associated to the municipality and the public release of a biography book on Luz Henriques, a native plastic artist.

The visit of D. Ximenes Belo also marked the Municipality of Culture 2009, with the public presentation of the 2nd edition of the book "Gentio de Timor” initially written by the Madeiran author Armando Pinto Correia, in 1935, who was born in Câmara de Lobos. The book was publically introduced by the Bishop D. Ximenes Belo within the 4th Cultural and Literary Forum, promoted by the Madeira Writers Association
