Municipality of Culture 2011 - Machico  Municipality of Culture 2011 - Machico

In 2011, Machico hosts the title of Municipality of Culture, thus continuing the project of cultural development and decentralization, started in 2007 by Madeira’s Regional Government.

Nearly after six centuries of history, Machico overcomes its geography and isolation difficulties imposed by the island itself, however, its economic potential and social growth, its rich and diverse cultural life, was possible and accomplished thanks to the courage, determination and strength of its locals.

As a way of making Machico’s daily creative and hard work in the culture area known to everyone, the Official Opening Ceremony of the Municipality of Culture, which was held on January 27th introduced a brief performance with different cultural groups representing the municipality.

The Machico Forum welcomed the choral group group of the Casa do Povo de Machico, the Municipal Band of Machico, the Prestige Dance Group, the “Borracheiros” from Caniçal, the cultural association “Flores de Maio” and the folklore group of the Casa do Povo do Caniçal.

Within the vast programming foreseen, is the official opening of the Whale Museum, in Caniçal, which is scheduled for early autumn, the Figura Avulsa, National Tiles’ exhibition, The 16th Century Market, book releases, the Madeiran Book Market...
The areas of music, arts, theater, cinema, gastronomy and urban crafts and crafts are included in this 5th Edition of the Municipality of Culture
